“Students may also bring if they desire, an owl or a cat, or a toad.”
When Harry got his letter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, he read all requirements, like books and equipment, that he will need when he starts attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Including in this letter is the option of every student at Hogwarts to bring their own pets.
Harry, along with Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts, went to Diagon Alley to buy all of Harry’s school requirements. Harry saw a snowy owl at a pet shop in Diagon Alley while they were walking.
Harry and Hagrid first went to Gringotts Wizarding bank. They went there to withdraw some money Harry’s parents left him and to get the Sorcerer’s Stone (secret business of Hogwarts by that time).
After getting the money to buy some of his school requirements, he only needs a wand now. Harry went to Ollivanders’, a wand shop, while Hagrid went on his separate way to do something he needed to do.
After Harry got his wand, Hagrid came back with his gift for Harry’s 11th birthday. Hagrid bought the snowy owl for Harry that they saw earlier.
This snowy owl was later called Hedwig.
Hedwig has always been close to Harry. Hedwig always stayed with him in his room at the Dursley’s home.
As an owl, Hedwig would always deliver and get Harry’s mail for him. Since the Dursley never wanted to do anything with the wizarding world, not only they are restricting Harry from going out, but they wanted Hedwig caged as well.
This is so that Harry would not send any letters to his witch and wizard friends. Hedwig was got injured due to the interception of the associates of Dolores Umbridge, a Senior Undersecretary to the Ministry for Magic, in order to stop Harry’s mail.
She got cured by Professor Grubby-Plank, a Substitute professor of Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts, and Dobby, a house-elf of the Malfoys before.
Death of Hedwig
Despite having been cured by the injury the associates of Dolores had before, Hedwig, however, died during the Battle of the Seven Potters in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
In the book, Hedwig died when she was in her cage and was killed by the Killing Curse which killed her instantly.
In the movie, Hedwig flew right in front of the Death Eaters while Harry was on the flying motorcycle with Hagrid. Hedwig was struck and died.
How did Harry come up with the name Hedwig?
Saint Hedwig is a medieval witch that was mentioned in A History of Magic. When Harry saw this, he decided to name the snowy owl Hedwig.
The reason why Hedwig dies in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
According to the author, Joanne “J.K” Rowling, the death of Harry’s longtime companion symbolizes the loss of his innocence because he is coming of age. That is why it was time for Hedwig to die during that time.
Hedwig despised Pigwidgeon.
Because Pidwidgeon is immature and hyper, Hedwig never liked this owl of Ron. Hedwig wanted to be seen as mature by Harry and the others.
