METAMORPHIC TECHNIQUE
by Margot Coyle
The Metamorphic Technique is a simple light massage to certain reflexes in the feet, hands and head.
The patient sits comfortably and relaxed while the practitioner works first with the right foot and then with
the left.
Sometimes the patient will not feel anything at all, sometimes there will be an awareness of
great relaxation, sleep, or electrical type sensations flowing through the body, or a feeling of energies
moving.
These sensations, while pleasant, are only side-effects of the Metamorphic session, as the
Metamorphic Technique itself brings about changes in more subtle areas of which the patient may
not be aware. What is happening is that the patient's life-force is creating movement and change in a
system which may have become blocked.
It was in the late 1960's that the Metamorphic Technique previously known as Prenatal Therapy, was
developed by Robert St. John, at the time a practising Reflexologist. The ancient Chinese system of
Reflexology, also known in the West as Zone Therapy and Reflex Therapy, is based on the principle
that the foot reflects all the organs and parts of the body, and when the fingers give a massage to the
feet, the result is a stimulus and a predictable reflex action is registered in the corresponding part of the
body, restoring balance and circulation and correcting disharmonies.
Robert St. John based his premise that who we are physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and in
terms of our personality, is predetermined, or patterned, while we are in the womb. Health is
wholeness - a free-flowing of life-energy, without impediment. However, if the life-energy is blocked
in any way, through maybe some distortion or trauma during our time in the womb, (the gestation period)
it can result in our being physically, emotionally mentally or spiritually ill during our life-span.
The most
important time of our lives, says Robert St. John, is the pre-natal period. From the moment of conception,
every cell in the body fits the individual, and for real changes to happen, we have to go back to this
pattern. Life patterns are stored, like bits of information on a computer, from the moment of conception
until birth, and they remain with us always.
All of this is reflected in the feet. For instance, the point of conception is reflected in the joint of the
big toe. He found this area, and the whole of the big toe, embodies the cerebral faculty and noticed
that there were strong associations with authority and inner decision to be who you are. He called this
the Father Principle. The heel area corresponds to the base of the spine and the genitals, which he
found reflect maternal, loving and caring qualities. This was called the Mother Principle. Between the
two points, he says, lies an energy pathway which has the power to bring about profound changes in
the body and psyche. While the blueprint or pattern of who we are develops our true nature is
determined.
The Metamorphic Technique allows, through it's gentle and reassuring massage, a great rebalancing
of this life-energy, a natural "letting go" of earlier impediments which stand in the way of our true
potential being fulfilled.
I like the analogy of a stained glass window, covered with the dirt and cob-webs of past ages, being cleansed
and polished, allowing the light of the sun to shine through the coloured mosaic. We are rather like that - we
"see through a glass darkly".
Our true "Metamorphosis" may be experienced as a process of growth towards our true state:
each one of us holds within our being a perfect state of wholeness. Illness, emotional and physical
difficulties are the coverings which can, through this work, be released. No claims or predictions are
made as to what will happen after treatments because the Metamorphic practitioner does not know.
Results are determined by the individual's innate intelligence. People who have experienced the
Metamorphic Technique find positive changes in the majority of cases - ranging from outstanding
improvement in physical and emotional well-being to rehabilitation after chronic drug abuse.
However, you do not have to ill to benefit from a Metamorphic session. Most people find that there
is more energy, a releasing of past ingrained habit and a general awakening to life.
Children respond
naturally to this foot massage because they do not have the same fixed patterns as adults. Much
work is being done in schools and institutions with mentally handicapped and emotionally disturbed
people with surprising results.
During pregnancy the Metamorphic Technique is especially beneficial,
because the unborn child is, through the mother, being enabled to find a greater freedom from the
influences precipitated at conception, giving confidence to emerge into the world and an ability to
cope more readily with the birth process. It is said that a difficult birth is more often due to resistance
in the child than to any weakness in the mother.
The Metamorphic Technique is getting in touch with the principles of life itself. It is an exiting and
rewarding adventure, and the potential help that can be received through this work is, like the life
principle itself, limitless.
